Description: Actinomyces naeslundii. Actinomyces species are gram-positive anaerobic bacteria and are normal inhabitants of the oral cavity in animals including humans. They are a major component of plaque, however, when invading tissues, for instance the mucosal layer by utilizing tears, they can cause actinomycosis, the formation of abscesses filled with pus and bacteria. Actinomycosis can occur in nearly every organ and is usually a mixed infection of several Actinomyces and other bacterial species (including Gram-negative species). Actinomyces naeslundii might be involved in gingivitis, mild periodontitis and root surface tooth decay and it is often the prevalent bacteria in cavities. However, it is not the main causative agent in severe periodontal disease.

Description:
Actinomyces is a genus of the Actinobacteria class of bacteria. They are all gram-positive. Actinomyces species are facultatively anaerobic (except A. meyeri and A. israelii both obligate anaerobe), and they grow best under anaerobic conditions. Actinomyces species may form endospores, and, while individual bacteria are rod-shaped, Actinomyces colonies form fungus-like branched networks of hyphae. The aspect of these colonies initially led to the incorrect assumption that the organism was a fungus and to the name Actinomyces, "ray fungus" (from Greek actis, ray, beam and mykes, fungus).
