Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

Rank: Species

Lineage: Bacteria;Proteobacteria;Gammaproteobacteria;Pasteurellales;Pasteurellaceae;Aggregatibacter;Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

Description: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, previously Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans typically resides in the oral cavity of humans and animals and can cause a number of diseases. The bacterium, along with 3 other organisms, is the main culprit in periodontis, which results in devastation to the bone supporting the teeth. Adherence to oral surfaces is controlled through the tad (tight adherence) locus, which may express proteins that are involved in type IV secretion. The bacterium actively suppresses immune responses through a number of secreted proteins, two of which are toxins; leukotoxin and cytolethal distending toxin. This organism causes bone destruction by interfering with the osteoblast/osteoclast (bone-forming cell/bone resorption cell) control mechanisms that normally ensure constant bone remodeling through a number of expressed proteins. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans can also invade nonphagocytic cells and spread intercellularly, causing apoptotic destruction of host epithelial layers.

Description:
Aggregatibacter is a genus in the phylum Proteobacteria (Bacteria), which contains three species, namely: (1) A. actinomycetemcomitans ( (Klinger 1912) Norskov-Lauritsen and Kilian 2006, (type species of the genus); Greek noun aktis, aktinos, a beam; Greek mukes - etos, mushroom or other fungus; New Latin actinomyces - etis, an actinomycete; Latin comitans, accompanying; New Latin actinomycetemcomitans, accompanying an actinomycete);(2) A. aphrophilus (Khairat 1940) Norskov-Lauritsen and Kilian 2006, Ancient Greek aphros, foam; New Latin philus from Greek philos meaning friend, loving; New Latin aphrophilus, foam-loving;(3) A. segnis (Kilian 1977) Norskov-Lauritsen and Kilian 2006,Latin segnis, slow, sluggish, inactive).
