Overview Taxonomy Detail

Bacteroides caccae

Rank: Species

Lineage: Bacteria;Bacteroidetes;Bacteroidia;Bacteroidales;Bacteroidaceae;Bacteroides;Bacteroides caccae

Description: This is a normal resident of the healthy human gut microbiome. In one comprehensive 16S rDNA sequence-based enumeration of the colonic microbiota of three healthy adult humans it represents, on average, 2.8% of all 16S rDNA sequences and 5.9% of the sequences in its division (Eckburg et. al. (2005)). However, this organism is also a pathogenic factor in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Bacteria;Bacteroidetes;Bacteroidia;Bacteroidales;Bacteroidaceae;Bacteroides

Description:
Bacteroides is a genus of Gram-negative, obligate anaerobic bacteria. Bacteroides species are nonendospore-forming bacilli, and may be either motile or nonmotile, depending on the species. The DNA base composition is 40-48% GC. Unusual in bacterial organisms, Bacteroides membranes contain sphingolipids. They also contain meso-diaminopimelic acid in their peptidoglycan layer.
