Nocardia farcinica

Rank: Species

Lineage: Bacteria;Actinobacteria;Actinobacteria;Corynebacteriales;Nocardiaceae;Nocardia;Nocardia farcinica

Description: Nocardia. This genus was originally described from specimens isolated by plating soil suspensions on diagnostic sensitivity test plates augmented with antifungal agents. Organisms in this genus cause opportunistic human pulmonary and systemic nocardiosis. This can complicate existing debilitating conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, or other neoplasms, or illnesses in patients with compromised immune systems. Nocardiae are also responsible for diseases in a wide range of animal species including birds, fish, cattle, dogs, goats, horses, and swine. Symptoms include spontaneous abortion, pulmonary infection, and mastitis. Nocardia farcinica. This species exhibits a greater degree of virulence than the more common Nocardia asteroides.

Description:
Nocardia is a genus of weakly staining Gram-positive, catalase-positive, rod-shaped bacteria. It forms partially acid-fast beaded branching filaments (acting as fungi, but being truly bacteria). It contains a total of 85 species. Some species are nonpathogenic, while others are responsible for nocardiosis. Nocardia species are found worldwide in soil rich in organic matter. In addition, they are oral microflora found in healthy gingiva, as well as periodontal pockets. Most Nocardia infections are acquired by inhalation of the bacteria or through traumatic introduction.
