Description: Nocardia. This genus was originally described from specimens isolated by plating soil suspensions on diagnostic sensitivity test plates augmented with antifungal agents. Organisms in this genus cause opportunistic human pulmonary and systemic nocardiosis. This can complicate existing debilitating conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, or other neoplasms, or illnesses in patients with compromised immune systems. Nocardiae are also responsible for diseases in a wide range of animal species including birds, fish, cattle, dogs, goats, horses, and swine. Symptoms include spontaneous abortion, pulmonary infection, and mastitis. Nocardia farcinica. This species exhibits a greater degree of virulence than the more common Nocardia asteroides.
