Rank: Species
Lineage: Bacteria;Bacteroidetes;Bacteroidia;Bacteroidales;Prevotellaceae;Prevotella;Prevotella intermedia
Description: This organism is another bacterium associated with periodontal (tissues surrounding and supporting the tooth) disease and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), although it is not as prevalent as Porphyromonas gingivalis. This organism colonizes early in the infection process, and like other oral bacteria it can bind and attach to other bacteria as well as epithelial cells. This organism carries antibiotic resistance genes, and may be responsible for antibiotic resistance in disease progression. Tissue degradation is dependent on proteases and hemolysin.
